First, we collect you in Marrakech from where we drive south to the Atlas Mountains on our adventure. We will arrive at Imlil—a pleasant Berber town with pocketfuls of charm, walnut orchards and fields all around—after about 1.5 hours. Our hike from Imlil follows the valley’s route and then leads us to the village of Aremd. There’s no way to describe how wonderful the falting peaks are. With every step you take, you’ll sense that the air freshens and gets a little colder. You can see changes in the views now, with snowy summits, tight trails and slow-moving streams passing through the mountain paths.
It takes us several hours of walking to reach the Toubkal refuge which stands at about 3,200 meters. Before we go for our summit the next day, we’ll be here for the night. The refuge may be plain, but it’s a warm and peaceful spot after a great hike. Only the wind blowing and the distant animals copying can fill the air in the high mountains. Now is a good time to take it easy and psych yourself up for tomorrow’s climb. After telling our stories and having a Moroccan meal, we call it a night early.
Today, we have the chance to climb Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, as we travel on our 7 Days Desert Tours from Marrakech. We start before morning light and slowly walk up the rocky tracks. It’s not that warm and the clean air freshens your lungs as you start climbing the mountain. Gradually, you’ll see the beautiful views spread out on all sides of the hike. Standing at the top, the view over the Atlas Mountains will make you realize how far you’ve come.
When we are finished at the summit and have taken photos, we head back down to the refuge. Going down is a quick trip and halfway we drop by Sidi Chamharouch, a white-washed place where locals go for guidance. When we are finished exploring the peak, we walk down to Imlil and have dinner in a wonderful guesthouse. On this day, you’ll notice the wildness of Morocco and explore the unique challenges and personal growth found on the tour.
After finishing morning meals, we say goodbye to the mountains and travel toward the desert. We will travel over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass which is Morocco’s highest and most beautiful mountain road. During the journey, we will visit amazing lookout points so you can get good landscape photos. The Glaoui family once lived in the Kasbah of Telouet which we come to after other destinations. When our stop ends, we move on to drive to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village made from clay and stone and listed by UNESCO. A number of films such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones, include this site.
We drive from Ait Ben Haddou to Ouarzazate—the African Hollywood—and stop at the Atlas Film Studios and at Kasbah Taourirt. Then, we travel on to Rose Valley, going past the palm trees of Skoura oasis and the old kasbahs nearby. Spring is a particular time to visit Rose Valley because of the fragrant roses and beautiful surroundings. We make it there in the evening, check into our lovely place to stay and enjoy a good meal. We begin the desert section of our 7-day tours from Marrakech with interesting culture, colors and a lot of beautiful scenery.
Today we continue moving deeper into the desert. After coming home from breakfast, we go through Dades Valley and stop for a while at Todra Gorges, where the cliffs tower about 300 meters. It is a great place to enjoy a walk and take wonderful pictures. As we go on, we come across desert towns called Tinjdad, Erfoud and Rissani. All these towns have something special, so a visit reveals how locals lived traditionally. Just before we get to the desert, the area becomes made up of golden sand and large, open spaces.
We arrive in Merzouga, the main town at the entrance to the Sahara and the center of the Morocco Camping trip. Feel free to unwind today in one of Marrakech’s riads or hotels and get ready for what lies ahead. The bright sand dunes of Erg Chebbi are beautiful to see and the quiet desert makes everything feel so serene. Now starts your trip to the Sahara and the real beauty of the 7 Days Desert Tours from Marrakech appears. When you’re done with dinner, go out for a little night walk before sleeping to be ready for a whole day in the desert tomorrow.
Once we finish breakfast, we start a full tour of Merzouga in our 4x4s. Our journey starts with Merzouga oasis, where you can enjoy the peace and amazing green palms. afterward we go to Dayet Sriji Lake which regularly attracts flamingos. Then, we travel to Khamlia, a place where we’ll hear Gnawa music—old songs from Sub-Saharan Africa; the village is famous for welcoming people. You’ll spend time with a family where they’ll serve a special kind of tea and perform incredible traditional songs. We next go across the dunes to M’fis, a former mining town where workers collected coal and minerals.
With the sun low in the sky, you’ll trek through the sand on the back of a camel as part of your 7 Days Desert Tours from Marrakech. After riding on dunes, you will arrive at a calm desert camp near the Sahara. Over dinner, you’ll watch the stars and listen to Berber musicians playing with drums around the fireplace. This is the real Merzouga Overnight Desert Camping. Desert Luxury Camp Merzouga provides authentic desert life and comfort in a private tent for you.
Set your alarm for the early morning, don’t miss the special moment of sunrise on the dunes. We come back to Merzouga village by camel after finishing breakfast at Desert Luxury Camp Merzouga Morocco. You’ll have a chance to clean up a bit before we start driving towards Zagora. At Rissani, we enter the traditional market and take some time to see the ruins of Sijilmassa which was at one time a main center on the old trade route. After that, we drive through the lush and scenic Ziz Valley.
We move on through Alnif and Tazarine, two small areas with a focus on fossils and the desert. The route of our road is along the Draa Valley, one of the longest and prettiest palm valleys in Morocco. When we arrive at Zagora, the setting becomes different. You will notice that life moves more slowly in the desert and enjoy the hospitable greeting from local people. When we get to our riad or guesthouse after the stopover, a pleasant dinner is provided. Today, we travel further south in Morocco and get closer to finishing our fantastic 7 Days Desert Tours from Marrakech.
To end the 7 Days Desert Tours from Marrakech, on the last day we first stop at Tamegroute to see its ancient library, pottery-making and ceramics made with a distinctive green glaze. After wandering through the area, we drive north along the Draa River, going through traditional Berber villages and beautiful valleys. We will visit Tamnougalt Kasbah which is a historical fortress located near Agdz. You can explore the calm beauty of its walls through narrow alleys.
We head to Ouarzazate, eat lunch there and return to some sites we enjoyed earlier. After that, we travel over Tizi n’Tichka yet again, this time returning to the city of Marrakech. As we continue, we’re able to admire the majestic Atlas Mountains for one last time. We expect to be in Marrakech in the late afternoon.
